Sound art has always fascinated me, largely because it feels unbound by any singular concept or genre. To me, sound art is fluid, uncertain, ever-evolving, and always challenging itself. It’s an art form that can collaborate with, fuse into, and transform alongside any other medium. This openness is what excites me the most. I’ve always known I was meant to be an artist, and I believe, as Jean-Paul Sartre said, that existence and expression are one. I don’t want a single medium to confine me. With sound art, I feel free to move, unrestricted and open to endless creative possibilities.
My background as a director has also influenced my interest in sound art. I spent two years studying directing at the Beijing Film Academy, which shaped me as a creator, especially in understanding the dynamic relationship between visuals and sound. Directing experimental short films and creating soundscapes for them has been a thrilling journey, allowing me to experience the freedom of combining these two realms.
In addition, music has always been a core part of my life. I compose, arrange, and create scores for other artists, and I find meaning in how sound resists labels—it simply exists. Sound art, to me, is the process of transforming seemingly meaningless sounds into something entirely new and meaningful, and this gives me the freedom to explore my creativity without boundaries.
Another aspect of sound art that deeply resonates with me is its interdisciplinary potential. Sound art doesn’t just belong to music or performance; it reaches into film, visual arts, digital media, and beyond. It bridges gaps between disciplines, creating connections that expand how we experience art as a whole. This interdisciplinary nature allows for experimentation and invites collaboration across fields, opening up endless possibilities. I’m eager to explore how sound can transform spaces, interact with visuals, or even become a medium for storytelling in ways that traditional forms cannot achieve alone. This boundary-crossing quality is what makes sound art endlessly exciting and inspiring to me.
